5 Ways My Values Save Me Time & Energy Daily
They're my daily compass for faster decisions, better hires, and stronger partnerships.
Running my own business alongside the non-profit Top 50 Farmers means my days are packed with a million critical decisions that shape the future of both organizations.
The best way I’ve found to streamline my decision-making is by being crystal clear on my values. It’s the blueprint for how I show up, who I work with, and what I focus on.
All of us already have values we operate by. Whether you’re conscious about how they effect your leaderships style is a different story.
Here are 5 ways knowing my values has saved me and my clients enormous time and energy as a leader:
1. Faster Decision-Making
When faced with any choice, I run it through my values checklist. If it doesn’t align, it’s a no-go or a chance to fix what needs fixing. This simple filter saves tons of mental energy and keeps me from spinning my wheels.
2. Navigating Hard Conversations
I used to get frustrated when people didn’t “get it” or acted against my expectations. Now, I remember not everyone sees the world like I do. Instead of getting stuck in frustration, I use my values as a communication tool to address what went wrong and find a way forward.
3. Collaborating with Partners
I get requests to collaborate daily. In our initial chats, I’ll ask about organizational vision and values to see if our cultures mesh and if there’s brand integrity in the partnership. If there’s alignment, it’s a yes. If not, it’s an easy no.
4. Moving Through Uncertainty
There’s no blueprint for what we’re building. It’s all about innovation. Every day brings fresh challenges and unknowns. Instead of getting overwhelmed or paralyzed by uncertainty, I use my values as a gut check to figure out the right next step.
5. Hiring Good People
Understanding a potential hire’s values is the best filter for figuring out if we’ll be good teammates, especially in an impact-driven organization. Values can’t be taught. Skills can.
Leading from your values isn’t just a philosophy — it’s a practical strategy that saves time, conserves energy, and keeps you deeply connected to what truly matters.
